Mr. Fitzgerald, [UM Public Affairs & Internal Communications]<\/span><\/p>\n

As I read a news post which includes some of your thoughts as they relate to Campus Response Teams<\/b> \u2026 at University of Michigan<\/b>.<\/p>\n

[Your statement]: \u00a0“the settlement makes it ‘abundantly clear’ the lawsuit was unnecessary. …Vigorous debate on all sides of an issue has been a hallmark of this campus before and during the lawsuit. We have confidence that true diversity of thought will continue to flourish on our campus.”<\/p>\n

I adamantly disagree<\/b>. \u00a0The inception<\/b>, and even the existence of such \u2018teams\u2019 (and the policies which supported the formation of<\/b>, and then instituted, such teams<\/b> – necessitated the suit<\/b>. Without doubt.<\/p>\n

Further, I am shocked that there are (thinking) people in academia who would support such notions!<\/p>\n

University, for me, was an unparalleled opportunity for learning and exploring New Ideas, CHOICES; University allowed me the FREEDOM to believe\/ speak\/ debate openly and freely <\/b>[Right-Left \u2013 Middle] which, I believe, is paramount to any secondary education process. <\/b><\/p>\n

Mr. Macintosh was on point: \u201cthe campuses which still have Bias Response Teams “inhibit our freedom of speech.” [and worse! They work to change peoples\u2019 behavior through distasteful, intrusive policies and intimidation. <\/b>\u201c[comment]\u201d Added my this writer<\/span><\/i>, JL]<\/p>\n

Attempts to \u2018shut down\u2019 reasonable speech [because one person, or a board, or a chairperson does not agree] is not American. The policies UM supported border on Totalitarianism<\/b> and do not support any notion of \u2018University\u2019 that I (and countless Americans) embrace.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d give so much if you, and others, would simply take an honest look; Universities were not intended to produce cookie cutter graduates who all think alike \u2013 and, such an attempt is an enormous disservice to your students, the country, and the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

You, Mr. Fitzgerald, are on the wrong side of this debate; your vision of \u2018changing the world\u2019 [in my opinion] needs reevaluating. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, hate, bios through ignorance, bullying \u2026 are all bad \u2026 but your [Universities] (final?) solution <\/b>\u2026 is worse than the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

It can NOT\u00a0 be \u2018our way \u2026 or the highway\u2019<\/b> (not when it comes to University and THESE ideals. \u00a0For such notions one sided notions* \u2013 those in charge at UM are in the wrong profession.<\/span><\/p>\n

*Such notions are<\/b> fine and good for any individual, or even groups of individuals \u2013 but not for University<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m Just Sayin\u2019 \u2026 .<\/span><\/p>\n
